Things to Do ...

This section is devoted to recreational options for delegates.
  • The IIT Kanpur campus is in itself a place worth exploring. Avid bird watchers can treat themselves (not on a plate but on a film roll maybe) to the migratory birds who choose to make the IIT campus their home at this time of the year. Visit http://www.cse.iitk.ac.in/~amit/birds/ for more information and snaps. The swampy area behind Student Hall of Residence 8 is particularly a favorite haunt for bird watchers.
  • Sports lovers are in for a treat as FSTTCS is largely coinciding with the 45th Inter-IIT Sports Meet (11-18 Dec, 2009) which will host over 1500 delegates from all over the country representing the 15 Indian Institutes of Technology campuses. The meet will feature 15 events including Athletics, Basketball, Weightlifting, Skating, Squash and Football among others. Visit http://www.iitk.ac.in/interiit09/ for details.
  • Delegates can sample the culinary treats offered by the canteens located in the Student Halls of Residence or at the Campus Restaurant (formerly Red Rose) located at the Shopping Complex. For the more adventurous souls, the city offers more variety.
  • There are booze ``parlors'' and a few eateries located just outside the IIT main gate. The city offers options for fine dining (and boozing) at various restaurants (Hookah, Little Chef, Antarang, Chin-Mi ...) and malls (Rave 3, Rave Moti). Delegates who wish to visit these places are requested to hire a car for the entire duration of the trip.
  • Delegates who wish to visit the banks of the holy river Ganga may like to plan a trip to Bithoor which lies on the banks of the Ganges and is of historical significance owing to its connections with the First Indian War of Independence in 1857.
  • For those who wish to visit the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, a recommended option is to hire a car and drive to Agra. The distance is approximately 300km, each way, and the price of hire is Rs. 7.35 per kilometer. One has to pay for the round-trip drive. Agra has many hotels, so finding a good one on the spot is usually not a problem. However, if you wish to book ahead of time, you can use services provided by either Dreamz Travels or Pearl Travels. Guides for Taj Mahal are available at the entrance of the Taj Mahal itself and may be hired for about Rs. 150. The Taj Mahal is open from about 8am to sunset (around 4:45pm). For visiting the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, you might need to hire a car to drive to those locations.

Wish you an enjoyable and productive time at FSTTCS 2009 !!
